What a day! What a LOVELY day!
George Miller returns to the apocalyptic world of “Mad Max” to share a new tale — the origin story of Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy), who is taken from her home at a young age by a sadistic warlord (Chris Hemsworth).
Furiosa remains one of my favorite feminist icons in cinema, so to say I was excited to learn more of her story was an understatement.
And although it took a while for me to become fully invested in the story, “Furiosa” is a high-octane, pulse-pounding race across action-packed wastelands. It is violent, wildly entertaining and full of demented characters. It’s one helluva juicy tale of vengeance. And we all know I’m a sucker for a revenge.
Surprisingly, it took almost an hour for Anya Taylor Joy to join the film and she only has about 30 lines. However, Joy speaks volumes with her eyes. Ferocious and filled with hate, her eyes are enough to deliver every fiber of emotion she feels. And she just kills it.
Speaking of killing it, Hemsworth adds a whole new level of chaotic energy to the franchise. He bops like a bestial, dystopian Captain Jack Sparrow with a prosthetic nose and flowing cape. But he is a convincing villain, and cuts the tension when necessary.
Much like “Mad Max: Fury Road”, you can tell immediately that the film is fueled by Miller’s passion for storytelling. The cinematography is paired with his directorial prowess make for a truly expressive film. It’s beautiful and entertaining as hell.
And although it may not be super logical plot wise, it’s a wild ride worth taking.
Plus, the flame-throwing heavy metal guitarist returns. What more could we want!
