Nothing is more explosive right now than the irresisitably charming, Ryan Gosling…except Ryan Gosling AS a stuntman surrounded by explosions in David Leitch’s “The Fall Guy.”
The film follows stuntman, Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling), who finds himself involved in a conspiracy surrounding the leading actor of his current project, being directed by his ex (Emily Blunt).
From start to finish it is the definition of fun, blending action, mystery, humor and romance into a perfect start to the summer season. It’s self aware and smart, powered by two of the most charismatic actors in Hollywood. Gosling and Blunt have electric chemistry, making it impossible to have a bad time.
Naturally, the film touts LOADS of impressive stunt work, including a record breaking canon roll stunt. Sure there are VFX involved, but “The Fall Guy” makes a very loud statement against today’s CGI-infested blockbusters and the art of deep fakes.
And although I loved a film honoring the technical process, my favorite part is the end credits that feature a montage of behind the scenes footage from the film.
I literally felt like I was a little kid, watching the old stunt shows in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. I remain in awe of all the hard work and love that goes into making the shot seem so effortless.
Stunt work is not easy. I obviously don’t speak from experience, but it is a profession that is not for the faint of heart. They risk their lives every single day they are on set for the art of entertainment, and yet, the industry hasn’t given these brave men and women the credit they deserve.
“The Fall Guy” is a love letter to those individuals and the hundreds of people who work “behind the scenes” to make films come to life. Without those people, we wouldn’t have the stories we love today. So thank you. And thank you to Leitch for honoring these professionals so perfectly…with a blast. I
