Determined to lose their virginities to cheerleaders, unpopular high school seniors, PJ and Josie (Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri), start a fight club. Oddly enough, their plan works and soon the duo find themselves in a bit over their heads.
From start to finish, “Bottoms” is an unapologetic riot of a teen comedy filled with insanity, violence and helluva lot of laughter.
“Bottoms” may be TOO much ridiculousness for some viewers and it certainly was not exactly what I expected. However this feminist fight club had me cheering thanks to Emma Seligman’s bombastic direction and the cast’s commitment to the film’s camp. No crumbs were left, y’all.
Sennott and Edebiri have electric comedic chemistry as the leading duo. They do not miss a beat of the ferociously funny dialogue. Sennott has already had a memorable portfolio of performances but it is Edebiri who steals the show. She is SUCH a star and 2023 has proven to be such a strong year of performances for this young actress. I look forward to seeing what the future has in store for my favorite “chef.”
Beyond the leading ladies, it is Nicholas Galitzine’s outrageous performance as the high school’s overdramatic quarterback that left me in stitches. Ex-NFL pro, Marshawn Lynch, also has some memorable moments that were hilarious.
Overall, “Bottoms” is a fresh and funny revival of the teen comedy worthy of a watch.
Plus, blooper reels make a triumphant return and that earns major points in my book.
