“Talk to Me” is a creepy and well-crafted addition to the A24 horror collection.

If you know me well enough, August is the start of spooky season and there’s no better film to kick it off than A24’s “Talk to Me.”

The film follows a group of friends who discover how to contact spirits using an embalmed hand. All is freaky fun and games until one of them unleashes something truly terrifying.

Creepy, gnarly and unpredictable, “Talk to Me” is another strong addition to the A24 horror library. The Philippou Brothers capture something truly eerie, delicately crafted and completely gripping despite its mild misfires. By no means does it make your skin crawl like “Hereditary” or make you cheer like “Midsommar, but “Talk to Me” does find its own special way to stick the landing.

Built on trauma and grief, there are such layers beneath its paranormal moment, largely thanks to a brilliant performance from its protagonist and newcomer, Sophie Wilde. She commands the screen with vulnerability and a unique brilliance that makes the unfolding narrative far more impactful.

“Talk to Me” has already been greenlit for another installment, which is always exciting for the genre — especially when it comes to original storytelling and not recreating the wheel. And while “Talk to Me” isn’t an instant classic for the spooky season portfolio, it is certainly the watch and I’m excited to learn more about this story.
