In 2006, we were blessed with Borat, a ridiculous and hilarious mockumentary of a fictitious journalist from Kazakhstan and his travels throughout the United States. The film is an iconic milestone in pop culture and famous for its unscripted moments of hilarity. I was in high school when the film came out and it still remains as one of my favorite comedies to this day.
Fastforward to now — our country is in turmoil and the world is a distaster. That being said, we are all in desperate need for a laugh.
So there is no better time for Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat to return in his anticipated sequel Borat Subsequent Moviefilm on Amazon Prime.
But after fourteen years, are Borat’s antics still worth the time?
Absolutely.
The character of Borat (as absurd as he is) is a work of satirical art. He has a way of exposing our country’s culture and all of its ridiculousness in the most honest and outright way. It’s a work of comedic genius.
Of course it isn’t as brilliant as its predecessor however, this sequel truly exceeded my expectations with its shock value. I haven’t laughed continuously throughout a movie in a VERY long time. From the pandemic to the presidential race, nothing is off limits.
And of course we know Sacha Baron Cohen’s commitment to Borat is unparalleled. The man is fearless. However, it is Maria Bakalova who plays Borat’s daughter who truly steals the film. As her character blossoms into a strong and free thinking woman, she truly holds her own and her improvisational skills are highly impressive.
Overall, this is a “VERY NICE” sequel well worth the watch.
Final Thoughts: With hilarity, heart and a helluva lot of ridiculousness, this sequel is a GREAT SUCCESS.
