Based on the true story about a secret British World War II organization founded by Winston Churchill, Guy Ritchie’s “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” was tonight’s AMC Screen Unseen.
And man, I have to admit, this was a lot more fun than my last two screenings of this famous mystery series.
“The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” is a bloody romp that thrives on two elements: its nonstop, violent action sequences and its attractive and charming ensemble.
Led by the charismatic Henry Cavill, the rag tag team has fun chemistry, making it easy to root for them even if we don’t really watch them develop.
Cavill, who sports another ridiculous cinematic mustache, seems to be thriving in his action era. Although it is Alan Ritchson, who stole the show for me as a deadly yet delightful Nazi-hunting archer with such tiny glasses. Why do we keep putting big guys in tiny glasses? I don’t know but I never want it to stop.
End of the day, Guy Ritchie’s stylish historical spy thriller is his very own stylish version of “Inglorious Basterds.”
It may come off clunky with its inability to balance the tonal hybrid of action and comedy, but nevertheless it is still a fun ride and a unique take into a chapter of world history.
In other words, if you enjoy pure popcorn entertainment and a LOT of ruthless Nazi killing, this is for you.
