Electric ensemble powers fearless “May December”

Predator. Prey. Exploration. Exploitation.

These lines become blurred and trampled in Todd Haynes’ newest film, “May December.”

Twenty years after their scandalous romance made headlines, the drama follows a married couple (Julianne Moore and Charles Melton) put to the test when an actress (Natalie Portman) begins to research their past to prepare for a film about their lives.

Unafraid of diving headfirst into discomfort, “May December” is an intoxicating and darkly humorous tragedy.

The subject matter is uncomfortable. Yet, Haynes has found a way to dissect the central relationship that is not judgmental nor romanticized. He accomplishes this through a deliciously disturbing three-way character study, which is where I became instantly hooked.

Moore and Portman are both tremendous in their respective roles as the two go head to head. Moore outdoes herself as the unashamed, manipulative pariah, while Portman soars as the narcissistic method actress. And yes, cinephiles — we are blessed with another Portman “voice.”

“May December” sounds like a clash of the titans returning for another idyllic awards season. However, it is Charles Melton’s emotional anguish that outshines both Academy Award-winning leads, and makes the film a success. .

Melton is perfection. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes of the chaos known as “Riverdale,” Melton’s performance is the heart and soul of the film.

A man trapped in his youth and tormented by the loss of his childhood, watching Melton gradually come to terms with his life is heart breaking. His nuanced realizations feel like gut punches. I still haven’t picked my jaw off the floor from Portman’s character telling him, “that’s what grown ups do.”

Melton has become an early favorite this awards season scooping up accolades at the Gotham Awards and NYCC. I now know why. Melton is not to be forgotten this season.

“May December” is uncomfortable. It isn’t an easy watch but with a powerful ensemble, it is impossible to look away.
