When the powers of Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau and Ms. Marvel (Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani) become entangled, this unlikely trio must team up to save the universe.
With maddening multiverses, secret invasions and all things Kang, it has been a while since Marvel just had fun. And that’s exactly what “The Marvels” is — pure easy breezy fun.
It doesn’t take itself seriously and it’s easy to enjoy despite its wobbly tonal shifts (which I assume is a product of rewrites and reshoots). It isn’t perfect but the action sequences are well choreographed, the visuals were vibrant, and the humor is on point.
But the heart of the film are the three leads. “The Marvels” themselves have fantastic chemistry. Filled with plucky enthusiasm and humor, Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel is the clear stand out of the film. But overall, you can tell EVERYONE (especially Samuel L. Jackson) had a blast doing something goofier than a traditional Marvel film.
And maybe it’s because I’m on vacation while seeing this, but I had fun. I was smiling. I was laughing. And I was just happy to see everyone having a good time versus trying to make Quantumania happen.
Plus, the film features the best use of the “Cats” musical in the history of mankind. And for that I say, “bravo.”
